Mann Cup 97 Game Summaries

Game 3

I have done tonight's game summaries differently. Trying to give everyone a feel for the game, I've created a running box score of how the game progressed. This is rather than having the team's statistics separately. Let me know if you prefer it this way...Daryl

    Game Reports

    From Scott:

The Shamrocks finally really showed the Gamblers what they are capable of tonight. Very even game for the first two periods, with both teams playing a fast, exciting brand of LAX, and then the Rocks blew it open with 7 unanswered goals in the 3rd.

To a man, the Rocks played a more intense and complete game tonight, they were hungry for the win, played aggressively on defense and loose balls, and on offense there was more movement of the ball and the players. Victoria's transition game was also in high gear, especially in the 3rd period.

Darren Reisig was a deserving "game star" for Victoria tonight. He played good hard in your face defense, sucked up loose balls, and was a threat offensively.

Rich Kilgour was the game star for the Gamblers, but I am not sure why. He played well, had 3 assists, but his brother Darris really stood out to me. Darris had 2 goals and 2 assists and was constantly a threat with and without the ball, and managed to draw some penalties from undisciplined Shamrocks. Maybe they couldn't give it to him because he got tossed in the middle of the 3rd for disagreeing with Referee Rick Lum, but Darris wasn't alone on this as Tyson Leies got a 10 and Chris Prat the gate for the same thing. Seems that both teams & fans now know who Rick Lum is.

Overall, it was certainly the most entertaining game of the series so far. The Rocks got to Gambler's goalie Bob Watson, and Jason Luke the fine rookie was held pointless. But don't count Niagara out just yet... , they have a good team and I am sure will bounce back tomorrow. The question is can the Rocks show up tomorrow with the same effort and determination??

    From M:

    Daryl,

We just got back from game 3 at Memorial Arena. The final score: SHAMROCKS 14 - GAMBLERS 7.

It was tied for the most part for the first two periods. Whenever the Shamrocks tied it up, the Gamblers would come right back with a goal.

They were tied 7-7 going into the third period and the 'Rocks made 12 shots and got 7 goals. The Gamblers switched goaltenders about halfway through; Watson for Kells.

The Arena was packed, standing room only. Game 4 is sold out with only standing room tickets left.

The fan support for the 'Rocks is awesome!! One of the local radio stations has something called 'Theme Thursday' Rock line and they called it the 'Sham'rock line today so people could request songs to get the guys pumped up for this evenings game. I guess it worked!!!

    GO 'ROCKS!!!

    M. in Victoria

    From Pete:

The Shamrocks showed what they have, and were able to 'roll a seven' against the Gambler's in the third period. Victoria's impressive surge of five goals in the first six minutes of the third was enough to end Bob Watson's evening.

The game was a tight close fought affair through two periods. Both teams had a goal apiece in the first two minutes. Darris Kilgour got a fine goal, the Gambler's third, after being nearly mugged by Bruce Alexander. A lesser player would have gone down, but Kilgour was able to keep his feet and get a strong shot low past Marty O'Neil.

The Shamrocks showed real team spirit whenever there was an altercation. It was certainly a case of all for one. A highlight of the first period was a fight between Dave Bremner of Victoria and Derek Graham of Niagra Fall. This tilt between 5'11" Bremner and 6'1" Graham was a short, but action-packed battle between the 220 pounders. Bremner may have won on points, but Graham landed on top.

The second period started of with some spirited play by both teams. An early goal Grant Johnston seemed to galvanize the Shamrocks into action. Although pressing for some hard-earned goals, every marker was countered by the Gambler's. Bob Watson made perhaps his finest save of the night stopping Chris Prat. The period ended in a 7-7 tie.

Apart from very even play, a few incidents marred the frame. Greg Pepper and Steve Toll had a spirited go-round with both players able to remove the other's head-gear and land a few blows. This action by Pepper was in response to Toll's cheap shot following Grant Pepper's unassisted goal. Blood is thicker than water. The third period was a brilliant display of Shamrocks solid defense, and ability to capitalize on every opportunity. Halliday and Gait scored in the first two minutes of the third. Then came a fine display of Shamrocks at their best.

Darren Reisig stole the ball right in front of his own net, sent it up the floor to Grant Hamilton, who hit Gary Gait breaking in late. Gait did what he does best, and fired it by Bob Watson. Then Alton Davis, a defensive workhorse, fed to Grant Hamilton, who drove to the night drawing two Gambler's defenders. Seeing this, Hamilton dropped it to a wide-open Darren Reisig, who took a blistering shot down low on the far sid of the net. This was the end for Bob Watson.

Ryan Kells was only in net for thirty seconds before he had to reach behind him for the ball. This courtesy of Rod Tapp, who picked the top corner. Darren Reisig showed why he earned player of the game honours by hitting Jason Luke against the boards right in front of his own bench. With about twelve minutes to go on the period, the Gambler's started to lose their poise. They took a bench minor, and tried to draw penalties by throwing themselves on the floor.

The third was marred by an ugly slash by Jason Luke on Neil Doddridge. He took a five minute major as a result of the incident. Shamrocks got two more goals while he was in the box.

This game showed what the Shamrocks can do when firing on all cylinders. If they can keep up what they did in the third period tonight, it will take everything the Gambler's have to stay in it. The Gambler's team was showing a lack of sportsmanship towards the end of the game, something a sport trying to make a gain in popularity does not need. On the other hand, I hope they prove me wrong, and recover from this, as these teams have showed us some fine lacrosse.

Looking forward to game 4 tomorrow,

    Pete
