Ratcliffe leads the Nation
Port Coquitlam's Jeff Ratcliffe leads all United States NCAA Division I teams in goals scored percentage. By a narrow .01 percentage over Senior Casey Powell, Ratcliffe has averaged 3.90 goals per game, while Powell sits at 3.89. The Jr. A player who graduated last season from the Port Coquitlam Saints, also leads the nation in total goals scored (39), to Powells 35.
Ratcliffe is a Sophomore at University of Baltimore, at Maryland County, and plays for the UMBC Retrievers.
This season Ratcliffe will suit up for the Burnaby Lakers in the WLA.
By the way, the CLUSA (College Lacrosse USA), website is taking a poll for player of the year. You can vote for your favorite US College players at this address:
I'm sure Jeff could use all the support he can get :) ...

Coquitlam Adanacs 7, New Westminster Salmonbellies 2
The Coquitlam Adanacs defeated the New Westmisnter Salmonbellies in WLA exhibition play, on Saturday night.
The game was played at North Delta's Sun God Arena and was the first game for both clubs.
Kevin Brunsch led the Adanacs with 2 goals. The Bellies had three of Peter Black's sons playing for them. Matt, Stuart and David all suited up for the red and blue Bellies.

Rumours abound
Sources back east have informed me there could be a major influx of Jr. A talent heading out west this year. Three big names from the Whitby Warriors Jr. A Lacrosse Club, could be heading for the big Green machine, (Burnaby Lakers), for the 1998 Major Junior Lacrosse League season....as well there is a good chance, of a couple of first line Western Jr. A players heading the other way. The Orangeville Northmen, are looking to sign two top players to join fellow westerner Ryan Painter. All players are Mercyhurst Lakers teammates, now playing in the NCAA Div I Field Lacrosse League....staying on the rumour front, it looks like Nick Trudeau is packing his bags, to head back west to play for the New Westminster Salmonbellies. Trudeau was the number two overall pick in this year's WLA entry draft...
NCAA LACROSSE
To carry on with last edition's mention of Jeff Ratcliffe's outstanding goal scoring in NCAA Div I Lacrosse. Fellow Canadian John Grant Jr. (son of Peterborough Lakers great John Grant), is currently tied for 3rd overall in points scored and has the second highest, individual goal scoring feat this season, with 8 in one game.
Mercyhurst Lakers
To add to the injury list, Victoria's Ted Jenner has torn his ACL and will be out all season. He will be redshirted on a medical leave and save his elegibility for the season. Doug Bellamy of the New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies, is getting rave reviews for his work as an attackman for the Mercyhurst Lakers. Bellamy is benefitting from the double team, opposing teams have to throw at Victoria's Bruce Alexander. Alexander is almost unstoppable one-on-one, and Doug is taking advantage of it. I also heard that Brent Crosato is doing an outstanding job at long pole middy for Mercyhurst. As well, bellow Salmonbellie, Rory O'Connor is playing great D for the Lakers. A tip of the hat for our western guys out east.
April 3/98
Our local players in the US
First over all WLA draft pick, Jeff Ratcliffe of the Burnaby Lakers, is currently the second highest goal scorer in NCAA Division 1 lacrosse. Ratcliffe's goal average of 4.17 goals per game (25 in 6 games played) is second overall to Casey Powell of the Syracuse Orangemen. Powell is currently rated as the top lacrosse player in the world. Ratcliffe's UMBC Retrievers aren't doing as well as Ratcliffe is, and are a bit of a long shot to make the playoffs. Ratcliffe is 11th overall in points per game average...John Olson and his New York Tech team have a big weekend, as they play Adelphi in a matchup of 2 of the top Div II rated teams...Another top rated Div II team, the Limestone Saints (ranked 5th), have an important matchup as well. Local players Jake Lawson and Mike Fernquist are out with injuries but Greg Hiltz is having a strong year for the Saints...Travis Gillespie, Jamie Raffan and Travis Taylor have led their Storm King High School team to two straight victories, as they begin their lacrosse season, in New York. They play a team from New Jersey, ranked 3rd in the state, this weekend...The Mercyhurst Lakers continue their Division I schedule this weekend. The Lakers have been a little up and down so far this season. Bruce Alexander, Brent Crosato, Ted Jenner, Rory O'Connor, and Doug Bellamy are all local players from this area, who are on the Mercyhurst roster...Due to the success of the Field Lacrosse teams, who participated in the San Diego tournament, there is interest in a few these players. I know Whittier College is pursuing at least two of playes who were in this tournament....I would like to hear from any of these players and others who are currently playing field lacrosse in the U.S. I know there are others out there and would like to know how they and their teams are doing, please e-mail me.

San Diego Youth Field Lacrosse Tournament
The Burnaby team, attending the huge San Diego High School Tournament won 2 games (Poway and St. John's) both from California, and lost in overtime to a team from Maryland (Bullis).
However, through the magic of goals for and against,
they wound up in 8th place overall, so now must play the first place overall team tomorrow, a team from Germantown Pennsylvania. The winner will advance to the championship round and the loser plays a consolation round. Heres hoping they do well...
By the way the weather was gorgeous, with a nice brisk wind to keep the players cool.
March 20/98
Minor Lacrosse info
Minor Lacrosse registration seems to be up in most areas throughout the province. Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association is the largest, in numbers.
Youth Field Lacrosse
Two teams from our area are in San Diego playing in a giant high school tournament. This takes place at the famed Polo Grounds in San Diego. Both Victoria and Burnaby have field teams and we hope to have reports throughout the weekend. I have a contact on the Victoria team and if a Burnaby representative or parent reads this, perhaps they could send their teams info as it comes in.
John Tavares doesn't come west
The latest information on John Tavares, has the superstar signing with the new Akwasasne Club in the Ontario Major League. One way or the other, I wish he'd make up his mind so we could get this over with...
SFU is Number 2
The Simon Fraser Clansmen Lacrosse team has been ranked #2 in the latest USILA rankings. They have moved up one position from the last poll.
They won't be playing their scheduled game this weekend, as their opponents were mugged! It happend down in Tacoma, when some of the players on the Pacific Lutheran team were jumped and beaten up by some gang members. Even their coach was pummelled and some players are still in the hospital!
Lawson under the knife
Speaking of hospital, Nanaimo/Maple Ridge/Limestone/Port Coquitlam's Jake Lawson had ACL surgery on Wednesday, down in Gaffney South Carolina. I just got off the phone from Jake and he says the surgery went well. He was home yesterday and can already feel the knee getting stronger. He hopes to be off crutches in a week or so. His Dad, Al and brother Jesse are coming down in a week to see a game or two before heading home. Shame they won't be able to see Jake play too...
Maple Ridge Burrards
While the Burrards won't be having Lawson aboard this season, they will have a couple of returnees in Rich Catermole and Craig Gelsvik. Both missed the 1997 season.
Burnaby Lakers
The Lakers are gearing up for the 1998 season, expecting a few battles for positions due to their heavy draft. Burnaby will be playing out of the new Bill Copeland Arena, which is next door to their old home, the Burnaby Lake Arena.

WLA matters
Burnaby Laker's signing of Rick Ornar as their coach for the 1998 season completes the 3 coaching vacancies from last season. New Westminster and North Shore had earlier filled their coaching positions.
I hear there is serious concern over some of the monies being banded about by one of the WLA teams. With figures of $10,000 - $20,000 being offered some of the top players, the other teams are wondering how long it will be until the sh*t hits the fan.
The other 5 WLA teams do not have any money to offer their players. So what happens when the players of those 5 teams say "pay me or release me?"
Is it fair to everyone that one team should have money to offer but the others don't. Or is that just "tough luck" in real life terms?
I have also heard that Curt Malawsky has been offered a good contract by one of the OLA teams. Malawsky, who had been set to sign with the eastern club, has been told by his WLA team, North Shore Indians, they will match the figure.
Lawson injured
Jake Lawson, Maple Ridge Burrards first round draft pick, is out for the season with a knee injury. Lawson hurt his knee (torn ACL) playing with his college team (Limestone Saints) in South Carolina. This injury takes a full year to heal but Jake should be able to come back at 100% after rehabilitation. It's thought that Lawson won't return to college in the fall, as he is ahead of his graduation schedule, but will return for the spring term and college lacrosse ball.
USILA poll
The latest USILA poll has seen the Simon Fraser University Clansmen hit the #3 spot in the national poll. The Clan are 4 - 0 in league play with 4 lopsided wins. Sunday's game against Whitman should be their closest game to date. Peter Morgan leads the PNCLL in goals with 20 in 4 games.
Players abroad
With Lawson injured in Limetone, it looks like roomates Greg Hiltz and Mike Fernquist will have to find a new roomie to fill in for their 'den mother.' Lawson has played a major role in helping the two freshmen find their way around the college life, 3000 miles from home....Jeff Ratcliffe is among the top goal scorers in Div I NCAA action for the UMBC Retrievers. The Retrievers have started slowly in a much anticipated year. Ratcliffe has had goal scoring games of 5, 4 and 3....Jamie Raffan, Travis Gillespie and Travis Taylor are enjoying their school life at Storm King School in upper New York state. They have played 3 sports for their school during the year and now, finally lacrosse season begins. The players have travelled all over the eastern sea board, meeting coaches and seeing schools. They all hope to join a college program next year. Storm King's Steve Mandell has been a fantastic contact for the BC players wanting to go to high school in the New York later...John Olson, now at New York Institute of Technology, entertained the aforementioned trio during one of these weekends. Olson has entered NYIT this spring semester and looks to contribute to the #1 ranked Div II school....Mercyhurst College had a few anxious moments in their early season. With BC players, Brent Crosato, Ted Jenner, Rory O'Connor, Bruce Alexander, Doug Bellamy in tow, the Lakers head coach Peter Ginnegar had a mild heart attack during one of their early season games. With all the bedlam on the sidelines, Ginnegar's difficulty wasn't noticed, until one of the parents came down from the stands. Earlier in the week Ginnegar, who has done an outstanding job with the Lakers, had been informed the Athletic Department was considering moving the team down to Div II for next season.

Sounds like the John Tavares decision is getting closer at hand. According to Tavares it is between the Coquitlam Adanacs and North Shore Indians. I understand the Indians went out to see John before one of last weekends Buffalo Gamblers (NLL) games. He has also had many discussions with Adanac General Manager Les Wingrove. Either way Tavares will have to fly in to many of the earlier games until his teaching job is completed in June.
Had a few e-mails from some of our boys at school last week. I received an e-mail from Ted Jenner at Merceyhurst (Pennsylvania) and also from John Olson who has signed on with New York Tech, last year's Div II National Champions. Jenner, who plays with Victoria Jr. A Shamrocks and Olson with the Burnaby Jr. A Lakers will have to follow their respective teams on our web site until they return in May.
As well, I see that Burnaby Lakers (nee Poco Saints) number 1 draft pick Jeff Ratcliffe pounded in 5 goals in UMBC's season opening loss to Navy on Saturday. Look for Ratcliffe to be among the league leaders in goals and points this season. Ratcliffe is in his second year with the Retrievers.
The Limestone Saints (South Carolina)--Jake Lawson, Mike Fernquist and Greg Hiltz--won their season opener on the weekend with an easy 9 - 4 win over Catawba in their Div II schedule.
I hear that the Victoria Field Lacrosse Association, with help from some of the Lower Mainland representatives are enquiring about running Canada's next U19 national team.
Matt Dwane (Humboldt State in California) doesn't know if he will be able to play with their field lacrosse team this season. He has an extra tough semester academically. Of course Dwane will return for his senior Jr. A year with the Burnaby Lakers this year.
I have been contacted by two US Schools back east who are looking for Grade 11, 12 and PG (Post Graduate--students who need an extra year to get college ready) players to go to school and play lacrosse in the New York and Connecticut area. Anyone interested please send me an e-mail at: darylf@fernweb.com.
On that note I also have heard from a team in Ontario which is looking for mature, skilled players to play in a Jr. B league in the Toronto area.
Ran into two of the Poco Jr. A coaches on the weekend at our Masters (old timers team) practice at one of the local boxes. They are just getting going and preparing for their Jr. A season. Note to myself--take it easier next weekend at practice, I'm still hurting 4 days later...this getting old isn't what it's cracked up to be.
The BC Lacrosse site will be moving sometime in the next month or two. We have registered a domain name for our site. Now all we have to do is create the new site and move everything over. Should only take 6 - 8 weeks!!!
Feb 16/98
Notes and quotes from all over the lacrosse world this week...My contacts back east say that the Coquitlam Adanacs haven't finished with their recruiting for the 1998 season. Names like, Luke, Toll, Acursi and others seem to be cropping up...I hear the name Steve (Chugger) Dietrick mentioned with the North Shore Indians--and also a lot of $$$ going Chuggers way if he signs...Brampton Excelsiors would love to sign Curt Malawsky but CM would like it to be worth his while $$$ to sign with them. The Excelsiors look to have already signed Jim Veltman and Derek McCready and are probably the team to beat in the east this season, especially if they also sign JR, who they are chasing right now...Buffalo Gamblers seem to have one of the Gait's signed with them and are hoping for a strong returning cast from the Niagara team...Also out east the Jr. A Orangeville Northmen are looking to be in the thick of it again, with Josh and Phil Sanderson returning for their final year and Nanaimo's Ryan Painter will also be returning to Orangeville...
Feb 11/98
Draft results
Poco Saints and Coquitlam Jr. Adanacs had the most players chosen in the draft--nine each...Most surprised person at the draft was Maple Ridge Burrards coach Sohen Gill. Gill, picking 5th overall, found Jake Lawson--Poco's outstanding offensive threat--still available. The Burrard's coach could hardly get the words out fast enough to grab the talented youngster. Earlier in the evening his compatriots had tried to talk Gill into trading his pick for next year, on the assumption there wouldn't be any outstanding talent left when it came to the 5th pick...four out of the first five Burnaby Lakers picks were from the Port Coquitlam Saints. Perhaps the Lakers are thinking of changing their moniker...this should be interesting as the Jr. A Poco and Burnaby teams had some great rivalries during the year...Bryan Bendig, one of the Burrards picks, has informed Gill he will probably remain in the east this season. Bendig is currently attending school and playing lacrosse for the University of Hartford. He is hoping to play for the German national team in the 1998 World Cup Field Lacrosse Championships in July...
WLA News
Burnaby Lakers could have a new look this season, not just with the players acquired in the draft. Kyle Goundrey, the Lakers first pick last year who decided to play Sr. B rather than with the Lakers, has had his suspension revoked (given last fall due to alleged actions at a Sr. B banquet) by the Canadian Lacrosse Association. I'm told Goundrey would still prefer to play with his goaltender brother in Maple Ridge but doesn not want to play another year in Sr. B--so will reluctantly play with the Lakers if nothing can be worked out.
The Lakers have another disgruntled player in John Wilson who also played Sr. B last season. If the Lakers were able to move Wilson for another equally talented player, their fortunes would surely rise. On this subject, the Bellies took Lakers superstar Nick Trudeau second overall in this year's Jr. draft. Perhaps a swap of these two talented players would allow everyone to win...
Another Saint on the way??? I understand the Lakers have also talked with a Poco coach about filling in their vacant head coaching position. I will let the Lakers management make the announcement but stay tuned as either way Burnaby must make a coaching decision soon.
Coquitlam Adanacs may have a couple of signings to announce shortly. Free agent Andy Ogilvie may be close to inking with the Coquitlam club. I've also been told that General Manager Les Wingrove has been able to sign another eastern player. I will wait for Les to announce the signing but I believe his initials are SS. Gee that seems to be the same initials as the Poco coach that Burnaby has been speaking with.
Feb 7/98
W.L.A.
Coquitlam Adanacs signing of Troy Cordingley has everyone wondering if General Manager Les Wingrove has other irons in the fire.
Of course having an iron in the fire doesn't count for much until the signature is on the dotted line. Look for more Adanacs signing before the season begins...
The WLA's entry draft for top graduating Jr. A players takes place on Monday at Burnaby's Firemen's Club.
Poco Saints Jeff Ratcliffe will be the number one player chosen by the Burnaby Lakers. Ratcliffe, on Saturday (Feb 7), just scored 5 goals for the UMBC Retrievers in their 13 - 12 win over the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in Division I NCAA exhibition action at UMBC. Ratcliffe was pulled in the third quarter of play with the score 13 - 9 for UMBC. He is nursing a quadracep problem right now and probably won't play next weeks exhibition game against the Washington Shoremen.
Poco Saints other offensive superstar Jake Lawson has been told he will have to be considered a "lower mainland player" for the entry draft. Lawson, a Nanaimo resident, played the past 3 seasons for the Jr. A Port Coquitlam club. WLA Commissioner Ted Fridge has ruled that since Lawson played on the Lower Mainland in 1997 he must be considered a Lower Mainland player and is not elegible to be drafted by the Victoria Shamrocks. It was thought that Lawson would have a choice as to where his residency would be. Apparently not. Lawson will probably be the second player chosen in the draft although he has let it be known he is not particular about one of the WLA clubs and will probably consider other options if he chosen by them. Lawson currently plays college lacrosse for the Limestone Saints, a Div II NCAA club in South Carolina. The Saints have a chance at a national title this season and if so Lawson wouldn't be available until early June.
The Lakers would also like to grab Bryce Lamoureaux, last year's captain of the Western Division Champion Burnaby Lakers Jr. A team.
SFU 12 - 9 over Victoria U19
On a beautiful day at Coquitlam's Town Centre Stadium, the SFU Clansmen University squad defeated Victoria's U-19 team 12 - 9.
The setting was gorgeous, beautiful mountains in the background, sun out, it was like the middle of May. California should have it so good...
I was impressed with the Victoria squad, under the solid tutleage of Scott Browning. The boys were playing sound, positional field lacrosse. They may have been a little outmatched due to age and size but I think this is just what Coach Browning wanted for his boys. And they never quit, down 8 - 3 at the half they made a game out of it right to the end.
It was the first outing for the Clansmen and you can see the makings of a very solid team. The Clan will be tough to beat in the PNCLL this season. They are aiming for a reappearance in the national USILA championship in St. Louis, in May. Coaches Gombar and McLeod will have the team well prepared.
It was nice to see the local lacrosse people again, out enjoying the game. Without these volunteers the players and fans wouldn't be able to enjoy this great game. A special hello to some of the people I saw at the game: Glen Pollock, Clive Cook and wife Christine, Terry Kirstiuk, Randy West-Pratt, Reg Thompson and his wife Chris, Ted Fridge, Daren Fridge, Frank Neilsen. And it was nice to see Victoria's Bonnie Fraser, Tony Watson, Trish Carlson (Nanaimo) who came over to watch the game...
Jan 31/98
The main talk about town is the chance of superstar John Tavares signing for the summer with one of our WLA clubs.
This rumour has been out and about for a few months now but has recently heated up again.
North Shore Indians and Coquitlam Adanacs seem to have the inside track presently. North Shore's new coach Rod Jensen played with Tavares when he played with the Burrards in the early 90's.
As well Coquitlam has some insiders who are close to the Tavares clan.
If Tavares does sign it is anticipated he would bring a few bodies with him--Troy Cordingley being the most mentioned.
If this does come to pass it will help alleviate the loss of the Gait brothers who have decided to play back east this summer.
An early rumour for next season already has Gary and Paul signed with the Shamrocks. They would like to go out in a blaze as the Mann Cup will be hosted in the west in 1999.
Gill NLL "Player of the Week"
Maple Ridge Burrards star player Chris Gill has named as the Player of the Week in the 4th week of National Lacrosse League play.
For more details, see the article on Gill
Lax whispers:
Overheard Maple Ridge Burrards coach Sohen Gill speaking to an eastern player who was looking to come out west. Gill to eastern player: "I'll pay you the same amount of money as I am to our other top Burrards players. It's also the same salary I'm taking in. Zero!"

Indians get their man
North Shore Indians General Manager Harry Ferguson announced the hiring of Rod Jensen as head coach of the Indians.
Jensen had been sought by at least two of the WLA clubs looking for coaches. Jensen brings valuable WLA experience to the Indians and should do a nice job with the North Shore club. Rod replaces the late Bill Munroe. For a complete story click on this link.
NLL News - Week 4
ONTARIO RAIDERS 13 - NEW YORK SAINTS 11
Burrard's Chris Gill scored 4 goals and was named game MVP as his Ontario Raiders defeated the New York Saints 13 - 11. This brings the Raiders record to 1 win and 2 losses (both by a single goal).
Here is a report by Glen Dundas, who was at the game.
The Ontario Raiders beat New York Saints 13-11 in Hamilton tonight in what was a very exciting and chippy game. Saints came out strong in the first 1/4 dominating the Raiders. It was only great goaltending by Raiders' Robert Watson that kept
them in the game. Remarkably, Raiders came out of the 1st 1/4 leading 2-1.
In the 2cd 1/4 Raiders came on strong to take a 6-4 lead to the dressing room. Raiders'Glenn Clark suffered a serious ankle injury & had to be carried of the floor.
The rest of the game saw the lead change several times. N.Y. led 9-8 after 3 quarters.
Late in the fourth, Raiders got up 13-11 to hang on for the win.
Derek Malawsky had four assists and added a goal for the Raiders.
Raiders'Colin Doyle played a strong game with 4 goals; 2 of them about 10 seconds apart. As well, Raiders' Chris Gill scored 4 and was the games MVP.
Attendance was off from the home opener at 4078.
PHILADELPHIA WINGS 17, SYRACUSE SMASH 15
Syracuse, NY---Jake Bergey and Tom Marechek both scored four goals to lead the

Onondaga County War Memorial. Bergey's final goal at 3:23 of the fourth was the
game winner.
Syracuse held a 9-8 lead at the half, but the Wings (3-1) came back with nine
straight goals over the third and fourth quarters to wrap up the win.
Mike Mooradian scored three goals for Syracuse (1-3), while Mike Benedict scored two

NLL News
The first week of the young National Lacrosse League has been completed and Curt Malawsky is the "talk of the town."
Malawsky was the hero in the Rochester Knighthawks overtime victory over the hometown Ontario Raiders at Hamilton's Copps Coliseum. Malawsky finished with 4 goals and 3 assists and got the tieing and winning goals for the KHawks.
However, the Raiders were missing Maple Ridge Burrards star Chris Gill who still hasn't signed a contract with the Ontario team. According to reports Gill is waiting for the paperwork to be signed before he reports. Gill was burned a couple of years ago when he was with Baltimore and monies owed were always late or non-existent...
In other NLL action, Gary Gait's 7 goals and 5 assists led the Baltimore Thunder to an easy 23 - 12 victory over Paul Gait's Syracuse Smash. Paul led the Smash with 4 goals and 2 assists, while two of the WLA Victoria Shamrocks also aided Syracuse. Chris Pratt had 3 goals and 1 assist and Del Halladay scored a couple of goals.......The final weekend game had Tom Marechek with 2 goals and 3 assists, helping his Philadelphia Wings to a 14 - 12 victory over the Buffalo Bandits....The New York Saints had the bye this week.
