Team BC wins Gold

Win Nations Cup '97

Team BC came out victorious in overtime, winning the 1997 Canadian Jr. Men's Field Lacrosse Championship, 9 - 8 over Alberta

Ted Jenner scored the winning overtime tally with time running out in the period. Goaltender Matt Johnson was outstanding in the extra session turning back Alberta players time and time again.

Jenner was selected tournament MVP and all-star midfielder. Other BC members on the all-star team were attackman Mark Myiashita and long sticks Jordan West-Pratt and Travis Gillespie. Gillespie, and teammates Travis Taylor and Jamie Raffan will now travel to New York to attend Storm King High School on lacrosse scholarships.

Jenner and T. Pho had 3 goals apiece for Team B.C. Jordan O'Grady had a single tally. Kevin Olson made a major impact in the championship game winning face-offs at key moments in the contest.

"Coaches Daren Fridge and Jeff Gombar were very instrumental in BC winning the championship," said Manager Randy West-Pratt. "They really had the kids playing together and for one another. There was more team togetherness than I've ever seen before."

"Their coaching abilities were really put to the task as Alberta had scouted us very well. They had to make some quick adjustments during the game in order for us to be successful."

Fridge played for Team BC, the last time BC won the Canadian Championships, back in 1988.

Three year's ago Fridge helped coach Team BC to a Bronze medal, last year he opted to stay with his club team, the Tri-City Adanacs and they won the Silver. This year's Gold medal really capped a team effort according to Fridge.

Team BC only loses two players to graduation and will be looking to enter next year's competition as one of the favourites.
